Why Weight Watchers

We are inondated with weight loss programs particularly at this time of year. Company’s hoping to capitalize on our New Year’s resolutions take advantage of our weak spirits and over indulging lifestyles.

The first time I lost alot of weight, I gave up Wheat for a year. You can see a glimpse of my Wheatless journey here. or by typing in Wheat in the search bar. I lost about 10lbs just giving up wheat for a year. I’ve added wheat back into my diet, but through that journey I learned the food items to stay away from that effected my digestive system.

In the past I’ve also lost weight using the app My Fitness Pal. I was able to lose at least 5lbs., and keep steady weight management.

I gained about 10lbs. when our pipes burst in our home January 2018, and we were put temporarily in a Residence Inn (blame it on the pipes, right?). Temporary turned into 7 months! I think I would have gained even more weight if we had not had a kitchen. We actually went out to eat very little, but in spite of the situation, here I am, 10lbs. heavier!

 

So why Weight Watchers?
Several reasons.

  • I had good success with My Fitness Pal.  It’s a tracking system for calories, similar to tracking #WeightWatchers, so I was already familiar with this type of system.
  • I wanted to learn how to change my eating habits through the foods that “I” chose to eat. I didn’t want to buy food from a weight loss program. I need to learn how to choose, and prepare my own food in a healthy way.
  • Although I was afraid of the “point” system, it has created a calculator in my head that I can associate with food items. So grabbing a “zero” point snack is now associated with fruit, veggies, chicken, seafood, and eggs!
  • I wanted to have the flexibility to plan meals ahead of time, and cook healthy meals that my family can also benefits from
  • The cost was good

It’s only been 7 days, and my second weigh in is tomorrow. But so far it’s been a great experience. Based on my height, current weight and goal weight, I get 23 points a day. Here are some things that I’ve learned so far.

  • “Zero” points are an opportunity to change your eating habits. Over 200 food items are zero points. So when you’re hungry, you grab one of those 200 items, that you can eat unlimited. Your old habit may have had you grab chips, or cookies, very high in calories, fat and sugar, and also unlimited in consumption, but doing alot of damage!
  • Planning dinners ahead of time allows me to have more flexibility with meals during the day. So I plan weekly meals Saturdays, and shop Sunday. So far, many of my dinners are recipes from WW, Skinnytaste (included WW points), or  or recipes that I already love that I modify. Most of the dinners are between 0 and 6 points. Everyone is always looking for new recipes!
  • Leftover points from the day allow me to have a dessert.
  • Leftover points also rollover into the week if you don’t use them. They call them “weeklies.” Use your “weeklies.” Remember your body has to have enough calories to burn to lose weight.
  • You can earn points by achieving Fitness activity.
  • Join a WW facebook group for support, questions and ideas

Time to get healthy

So it’s 2019!! Time to get healthy.

I decided that I want to lose 10lbs. The possibility of being border line for several now common diseases is not appealing to me at 53!!

So I joined #WeightWatchers Saturday January 5th at 158lbs. I lost 2lbs. in 4 days. I’m very encouraged.

Blogging has always been like therapy for me, so I’ve decided to blog my weight loss journey.

Now there are many #weightloss blogs out there, but I hope to encourage others with my journey, delicious #low-calorie #recipes, tips and ideas.

Below is a great recipe. Sometimes I modify to original WW recipe to get the points down, or to eliminate food items that I don’t like.

 

Salmon with Warm Blueberry Vinaigrette

(WW Recipe. WW FreePoints per serving: 3pts.)

Yields: 1 filet and 1/4 cup sauce per serving

1 tsp. unsalted butter
1 large shallot, minced
1 cup fresh or frozen unsweetened blueberries
2 Tbsp. balsamic vinegar
1 Tbsp. maple syrup
2 Tbsp. water
1 tsp. chopped fresh rosemary
1/4 tsp. salt
Freshly ground black pepper
4 (5-oz.) skinless wild salmon filets
1 Tbsp. chopped chives

You can either grill or roast the salmon. If roasting, preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Line baking sheet with foil and spray with nonstick spray.

Heat butter in a small saucepan over medium heat and add shallot. Cook, stirring constantly, until softened, 1-2 minutes. Stir in blueberries, vinegar, syrup, water, rosemary and salt. Increase heat to medium-high and cook, stirring occasionally and pressing the berries with spatula to crush, until mixture is thickened, about 5 minutes.

Meanwhile, sprinkle salt and pepper over salmon and, if roasting, place on baking sheet. Bake until salmon is just slightly pink at center, 10-12 minutes.* Alternatively, you can grill the salmon 4 minutes per side.

Spoon blueberry sauce over each serving and sprinkle with chives.

Is it Safe to Ingest Essential Oils?

Each type of oil contains a mixture of natural chemical compounds unique to that species of plant and to the environment in which the plant is grown. For thousands of years, humans have ingested plants in the form of food as well as plant parts and extracts as herbal health products and teas from leaves and flowers, which contain essential oils.

One could argue that it should also be safe to ingest essential oils in small quantities, just as we have been doing when ingesting plants containing essential oils. Because they are produced naturally by plants, essential oils are found in naturally balanced mixtures. Then why is there an ongoing concern about the internal use of essential oils? Internal use can not only be very effective, but is also safe. Oils first have an effect on local tissues.

The local effect may be felt more strongly when applied internally compared to when applied to the skin because the nerves in the mucosa are closer to the surface, often more numerous, and can be more easily stimulated compared to the nerves in the skin. Although the skin is thicker and seems to be less fragile than the mucous membranes, the reality is that similar to the skin the mucosa has many features that are protective, and therefore conducive to the use of essential oils.

Like skin, the mucosa has many layers designed to protect the body against disease and toxic exposures. And similar to skin, the mucosa has an ability to constantly restore itself and to regenerate after harmful exposures, such as trauma from teeth or heat from foods that can cause ulceration.

The mucosa heals an open sore very quickly, so it can resume its protective function. The mucosa also has thousands of mucous glands that secrete mucous to create a protective film over the tissues. The mucous is continually being produced and continually migrating as the cilia beat, limiting any local exposure.

When essential oils contact the mucosa, they are absorbed to some degree at the initial point of contact, but much of the oil will be continually diluted by the mucous. Rapid absorption and constant dilution allow the oils to have a dramatic yet temporary effect, which explains why any sensation you have in the mouth or throat from essential oils taken internally is temporary. Because the mucosa is designed to be protective, essential oils can be safely used internally.

The premise of all of these discussions is that essential oils could be harmful when taken internally. However, studies suggest just the opposite. Essential oils may actually be protective to the mucosa. Many studies show that essential oils can have a positive effect when there is a problem with the stomach’s mucous membranes.* For example, limonene, found in citrus oils, was shown to help protect the stomach mucosa in a preclinical study.(3) This protective effect was shown without affecting normal stomach acid secretion, gastrin enzyme secretion, or antioxidant glutathione production.(3) Many other studies have also demonstrated similar effects.* (1–6)

Avoiding hot oils that may be irritating to the mucous membranes, using small single use amounts, or using less than the maximum daily amounts recommended, are all safe practices that can help us have confidence in using essential oils internally. If we are using the oils for a local effect, such as to soothe the mouth and throat, then the oils can be appropriately diluted. Internal use of essential oils may be the best method to help improve function of the gut and improve digestion, because the oils can get to the area of need.

Taking essential oils internally may be a very effective method to get the oils to be absorbed into the body to promote health and wellness, for an overall soothing effect on the body, and for a calming effect on mood. Using the appropriate amount of oils in Veggie Caps or prepackaged in the appropriate amounts in softgels can be an effective way to take essential oils internally so that they can be maximally absorbed by the gut for a whole body effect.

Well, Hello

It’s been a very long time since I’ve posted a blog on this site! I have been blogging, but I have a new passion.

Essential oils have taken over my life so to speak. I’ve been using them to care for me and my family’s physical and emotional health since December. They are amazing. I have kept a journal of the conditions that have treated with essential oils. We are no longer using over-the-counter medications. Essential oils are a natural solution to wellness.

  • I no longer have heartburn and acid reflux every night (DigestZen)
  • Headaches/Migraines are gone within 20 minutes (Past Tense blend of 9 oils)
  • I have lost 7lbs since March (No special diet or exercise, just taking essential oil supplements)
  • Colds are gone within 3-4 days, no cough after (Melaleuca)
  • Stretch marks (my son from weight lifting) are disappearing (Lavender and sandalwood)Ess oils
  • Carpel Tunnel. . . gone!
  • No more menopause symptoms (ClarySage)
  • Spousal snoring gone (Frankincense, it’s amazing!)
  • Allergies and watery eyes gone (Eucalyptus)
  • Mosquito bites, gone in 12 hours (Lavender)
  • Cold sores – most people can feel when one is developing. We put on Melaleuca and it never develops!
